Trend: Yard Art

Inspiration ›  Trends & Themes ›  Trend: Yard Art

In mid-March 2020, as COVID-19 became a global pandemic and people were required to social distance and shelter in place, it became increasingly more difficult to celebrate milestones or send well wishes to loved ones. Soon the resiliency of the balloon industry became apparent when balloon artists put their creativity to work installing delightfully colorful balloon decor for occasions of all types, from birthdays to babies, especially for the trend of "drive-by" celebrations.

While outdoor balloon installations are certainly not new, artists everywhere are experiencing a rapidly expanding business category, out of necessity! We've assembled some of the best resources available to help you navigate the unique challenges of creating decor that can withstand the elements and create everlasting memories for the lucky recipients!

Yard Art is perfect for celebrating:

  • Birthdays
  • Baby or Bridal Showers
  • Get Well
  • Congratulations / Graduations
  • Thank You

Considerations Specific to Yard Art

Weather

  • The Qualatex Bubble Balloon® adapts best to a variety of temperatures.
  • Microfoil® balloons will expand in the sun and heat, so underinflate accordingly to the local forecast.
  • Avoid dark colors in your yard art, as they absorb heat and may burst with heat and/or sunlight.

Nature

  • Grass is sharper than you think! Be careful with placing balloons too closely to the ground.
  • Placing stakes in hard ground can be difficult! Bring water to soften the ground and tools to help you put the stake in the ground.

Products

  • Electric Fence Posts and/or metal garden stakes (found in the garden department in home improvement stores everywhere) are perfect for building outdoor bouquets, as they provide multiple anchor points for securing balloons.
  • Dog Leash tie downs work well for anchor points for large installations
  • 260Q's add a nice touch to decor, but may not last as long as round balloons.
  • Add clusters of Masterbow Poly Ribbon at the bottom to help hide the support structure!

Led by Instructor Luc Bertrand, CBA, this 90 minute class, with a 30 minute Q&A, this webinar will help you gain a deeper understanding of: materials and physics of Yard Art/Garden Decor, balloons (including latex, bubbles, and foils), gases used in balloon inflation, and structural elements in balloon design.
