UNICEF estimates that roughly 130 million babies are born each year. That means there are literally millions of occasions to celebrate every day! Still not convinced you can make a business out of baby celebrations? Take a look at all the different types of festivities surrounding a new baby.
- Pregnancy Announcement – a newer tradition consisting of the parents-to-be revealing their exciting news in unique (and sometimes funny) ways.
- Gender Reveal – a very popular trend arising in recent years, this celebration announces the gender of the baby around the 20th week of pregnancy.
- Baby Shower – a celebration for first-time parents to shower them with the baby supplies they will need when their bundle of joy arrives.
- Dad’s Diaper Party – the manly version of a baby shower! The soon-to-be dad’s friends shower him with diapers (and sometimes beer!).
- Baby Sprinkle – since showers are typically for first-time mothers, a “sprinkle” is a smaller-scale shower held for subsequent births.
- Birth Announcement – a notice sent to friends and family to broadcast the birth of the new child. This has typically been a card in the mail, but in modern times it has become a post on social media.
- Sip & See – an informal celebration that originates in the South of the United States. This party is held after a child’s birth for friends and family to “see” the new baby while “sipping” on light refreshments.
- Baby Dedication or Christening – a religious ceremony to dedicate an infant to God and welcome the baby into the church.
- Bris – Jewish ceremony of circumcision.
Added bonus: think of all of the different types of life celebrations each of those children will have throughout their lives…birthdays, and weddings, and holidays, oh my!
Gender reveal parties gained serious popularity in 2015, and they have continued to rise in the years since. Balloon professionals on Facebook echoed that gender reveals are big business these days. According to Google Trends, gender reveal parties have only truly hit the United States, though the trend is spreading to other parts of the world – including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Check out The Very Best Balloon Blog to find some great ideas to pitch to your clients for gender reveal parties. Since pregnancy and gender reveals are typically professionally photographed, making connections with local photographers are a great way to get into the baby business in your area.
From a Balloon Professional
To get some deeper insight into the booming baby business, we contacted Avital Shechter, CBA, and Nir Shechter, CBA, of Nir Balloons in Israel. This dynamic duo report that nearly 20% of their business is centered around babies, which is substantial considering they book many corporate and private events in addition to their balloon entertainment business. “It is easier to sell baby designs since they are so cute!” said Avital. She went on to say, “The more realistic and sweet the design, the easier it is to sell it.” Here are a few of Avital and Nir’s suggestions to grow your baby business.
- If you want to stand out from your competition, create unique balloon decor. The key to expanding your offering for your clients is simply to propose the design. Many balloon artists offer the same traditional designs again and again because they assume that the client won’t be interested or it will be too expensive for the client. Although it is hard to move out of your comfort zone, bringing something new and refreshing to your clients is the key to your success. Satisfied customers will bring more clients who will also want special and unique designs.
- Like/friend your clients and tag them on social media! This will make it easier for you to turn your clients’ friends into new customers.
- When running an advertisement on social media, be sure to target your audience on Facebook by choosing the correct, detailed segmentation. For example: Parents to 0-2 months babies, Interests: pregnancy etc. That way, you will find the right potential clients.
- Clients love a one-stop-shop. Consider offering your clients complementary services. If you offer decor for baby celebrations, why not offer to do twisting entertainment for the family’s children? Most of the clients will appreciate your suggestion, and if it’s relevant they’ll prefer to order from one supplier rather than two.
